The name "Plaine Wilhems" comes from an enigmatic German who lived there in the 17th century among the slaves. Commander Le Toullec, who landed on the island in 1720 with five other men, met this mysterious man: Wilhelm Leichnig, a native of Cologne. In the writings it is said that he was forgotten by the Dutch. It was probably not an oversight but rather a desire on his part to stay on Mauritius. According to his descendants, he was the first to begin interbreeding. Since he lived with the slaves not far from the great Black River, he had a love affair with one of them. Ancestor of the oldest family to have settled on the island, Leichnig gave his first name to the highlands of Mauritius. Married in 1732 to a Creole, mixed race of European, Portuguese, Indian and African descent, they had 12 children together. It was not until 1920 that the Leichnigs settled back in Mauritius. The surname changed to Leckning because the French pronunciation was a source of puns! Few Mauritians know this story and the origin of the name of the Plaines Wilhems.
